  California Wines (Ross's Condo, New Orleans): I was expecting a bit more out of this wine than I got. From the initial whiff to the finish, the wine is a little thin and watered, not what I would expect from a California syrah. That said, there is a pretty cool tinge of smoke here, which frames well an oaked, black fruit driven, and softly tannic core. For under $15, this wine would be a steal by California standards, but there's just something missing that could have made this one so much better.

  This wine is currently on sale at Trader Joe's for $6.99, which is a very good deal for any Jade Mtn. wine. I thought it was sort of "syrah-lite" with good fruit on a modest oak framework, with soft acidity and soft tannins. Nice and quaffable but not at all serious, and definitely lacking in the smoky, bacon nuances of my favorite syrahs.
