  • I found this German wine in a discount bin for $9. It is produced in the Franken region of Germany. Franken wines are hard to find in the US because they do not sell well. The are marketed in the tradition "bocksbeutel" shaped bottle which is short and rounded. The Wirsching family has been producing wines since 1630 and the estate is considered one of the best in all of Franconia. Yeilds are extremely low, only organic fertilizer is used, the vineyards are steep and south facing and late/high risk harvesting is employed to get maximum ripeness. 35 years ago this estate was the first to plant the Scheurebe grape in Franconia and according to what I've read their Rieslings and Scheurebe wines are sought after by collectors in Germany. Only small quantities are sold outside Germany. The wines are often served at state functions in Bavaria. In 1980, the Pope celebrated mass with one of the estates 1967 Auslese wines after an alter boy spilled the original wine. The Pope liked it so much he finished the remainder of the bottle with his dinner. Pale straw color. Wonderful apple and pear aromas. As the name implies this is made in a dry style. I was not impressed with it. No noticeable flaws but it just was not to my liking. Perhaps the cheese we paired it with was not a good match. It seemed to lack fruit and had a bitter quality at times. The acidity was good and it had a nice underpinning of minerality. I'd give it an 84.
