  • The fruit is sourced from very old hillside plots in the Montalbano vineyard, planted in 1915. The blend is mainly Croatina (+90%) sometimes with a little bit of Spanna, Vespolina etc. in the blend. Macerated for 5-6 days with the skins. Aged for 2 years in tonneaux (partly new) and old Slavonian oak botti casks. Lot 3-15. 14% alcohol.

Somewhat evolved, fully opaque blackish-red color. The nose feels sweetish, somewhat evolved and a bit reticent with light aromas of wizened black cherries, some balsamic tones, a little bit of nail polish VA, a hint of ripe dark plums, a touch of dried figs and a whiff of tertiary meaty character. The wine feels evolved, savory and quite tightly-knit on the palate with a medium body and complex flavors of wizened dark fruits, some balsamic notes along with a suggestion of nail polish VA, a little bit of sour cherry, light elderberry tones, savory hints of game and pouch tobacco and a touch of licorice root. The overall feel is pretty muscular with rather high acidity and ripe yet quite assertive tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is long, evolved and rather grippy with a savory aftertaste of wizened dark fruits and sour cherry bitterness, some tobacco, light elderberry tones, a little bit of gravelly minerality, a hint of balsamic VA and a touch of soy sauce salinity.

A classically styled, firm and rather tightly-knit vintage of Piane Rosso that packs the muscular structure I always look for in this wine. After the two noticeably ripe and somewhat soft, sweeter-toned vintages of 2017 and 2018, this was a return to the traditional form. However, the wine also felt noticeably more evolved than I expected - tasting the excellent 2011 vintage a few years ago, it was a rather youthful and even quite backward wine. This, on the other hand, was getting somewhat tertiary, starting to develop first signs of oxidative characteristics (soy sauce and meaty tones). I don't know if this was just a lesser vintage that was not built to last for as long as the 2011, or if this wine had been kept in less-than-optimal conditions before I acquired the bottle, but I expected a little bit more of this wine. Well, it was still an enjoyable and rewarding wine all the same. I just wish the more recent vintages of Piane Rosso were as stern and structured as this! Good value at 21,83€.

  • Opened 3 hours before dinner no decant. Quite linear, mineral and red berries, good acidity, medium+ bodied and length. Elegant and classical, in a good shape now, not sure if it will further improve, but will easily stay for some years on this level, priced according to its quality or even slightly above.
