  • From Maria Gomes and Bical. Fermented on skins. Kept with the lees in bottle for 48 months before disgorgement. 13% ABV. 7,288 bottles produced. Medium straw-gold, with light perlage. Dark cherry, yellow fruit, grape, nuts, almond paste, chalk and smoke, with good acidity and superb length. The mousse is perceived as fine and creamy if very slightly aggressive. That said, as it breathes it becomes more apparent that the wine was produced from riper fruit, and lightly phenolic, and on its own it left me longing for a little more freshness. And yet, it works well wilt food. Probably the best Portuguese sparkling wine I have had so far, even if, stylistically, I am not a fan.

  • Similar to my last bottle but this one drank younger. Less nuttiness, not as soft. Still plenty of salinity and minerality.

  • This was a lovely surprise and a perfect bottle to open for anyone who thinks that champagne is the only sparkling wine worth cellaring.

Nine years out from vintage fines this wine in lovely shape. Characteristic that you might find in an aged champagne are present--the softness, the nuttiness, and dried fruit flavors, but Bairrada's terroir and grape varietals (Maria Gomes and Bical in this bottling) make for a very different experience, especially with the level of salinity and minerality you get from this wine.

Drinking wonderfully now but can easily go another 3-4 years.

  • White pulp fruits, nice acidity, lots of minerals. Great flavour concentration and long finish. Very dry, a bit austere. Excellent QPR.
