Piedmont wines: Not the best example as the cork disintegrated on opening. Colour was cloudy and showed signs of heavy bricking. Palate was advanced but serviceable, albeit without much grip or focus.

A brilliant wine drinking at its peak. Perfumed, elegant and nimble on its feet, it enthralled us all night -a great performance. Spices, herbs, etc. etc. but this wine was so good, I am not going to waste words describing the flavours. It was 10+ on the yumminess scale. Possibly one of the best Nebbiolo I have tried. Drink now or 5+ years.

Dark red - black color. Not showing any signs of age. Scent of tar and roses and a whiff of vanilla. Dense on the palate with big black fruits and abundant ripe tannin. Clearly modern in style. This big, dense wine saturates the palette. The wine has absorbed it’s wood leaving a bit of drying, woody tannins on the long fruit filled finish that offers a bit of grip.

96/99 side by side. ~4 hours of air. This is more ready and generous on both the nose and palate. Lots of red cherry, florals, smoke and spice. Palate has rich, round fruit with well integrated structure. Still youthful and should continue to improve for a decade+

(CORTESE RISERVA Barbaresco RABAJA) Barbaresco Riserva Dear Friends, This is what it’s all about. If you yearn for the truth in Piedmont, it is here within this bottle. I’ve been fortunate to try this wine on a number of occasions and not many wines have the chance to challenge Giacosa’s single vineyard Barbarescos but this wine does (at a far lesser cost). From a top year, this wine required the better part of a decade to sort out its complicated and angular personality. I’ve followed it form barrel, to bottle, to cellar and just now it is starting to come into its own. I predict very good things are on the horizon. Already a Veronelli “blue” 3-star signifying its status as the best in Italy, this wine deserves its day in your cellar but only for the patient and those willing to give it the time it needs to mature into a meditative and intellectual experience. Quite difficult to find in the US (especially compared to something like Giacosa), it is a true connoisseur's wine that is under priced among its competitors: We have an exceptional price on this item about the same as in Europe. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar 1999 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco “Rabaja” Riserva Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy7920

Fine, if workmanlike. Starting to dry out a little.
