  • APPEARANCE: Dark gold color veering slightly towards dark mustard.

NOSE: Very inviting and sweet fruity nose with hints of rich quality oak, spices, slight tobacco and honey.

FLAVORS: Interesting flavors of Asian pear, Taiwanese star fruit and bell fruit, cereal with hints of old or aged wood furniture, a pronounced but strange woody yet somewhat strange spice note towards the latter end of the mid-palate which was quite unexpected which I can't seem to exactly put my fingers on (perhaps sandalwood?), and fruity but not sweet note which was also kind of unexpected.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This Taiwanese dram has an old and delicate vive to it. It doesn’t have an age statement but it does seem to have an aged taste and feel to it. Though I’ve never really had any Port Cask whisky before, this was really an interesting but unexpected treat.

  • Still every bit the Kavalan fan I was before opening this
This is another good one from the lovely folk making single malts in the tropics. (Dad, I know you wouldn't have been able to believe it, but, seriously--whisky from equatorial regions really is damn good). This one is, as you'd expect, one of the sweeter ones in their lineup. Just for the record, I've tried less than half their lineup, but everything else was clearly drier than this one. Anyway, nice forceful note from the port barrels--a bit of tannic tawniness, lots of berries and vinous bits. Then the whiskey comes through, doing its thing: warm, toasty, nutty, a bit smoky, plenty of tobacco leaf, lots of vanilla. Finishes warm and fruity. This one is fun to drink and it would certainly be lovely if I could have some whenever I felt like it. But it's on the pricy side for that.

  • Second Round Of Tasting

    Visual: Clear, intense gold color.
Nose: clean, spicy. Bit too hot so adding some water for dilution. Intense nosing of tropical fruit. With touch of green apple. Spice is also noticeable. Clove. Vanilla. Oak note for sure.
Palate: powerful, full body with sweet note. Brown sugar. One can feel the alcohol.
    Finishing: medium to short finishing.
