Opened with the 2013. On opening, the 2013 was preferred. But with air (2.5 hours of slow ox in bottle after 2 glasses poured), the 2013 faded and became slightly harsh while this wine, the 2014, excelled. Big and bold in what I think of as the house style, this was giving the kind of powerful fruit and acidity that would cut through the fat of a ribeye or a thick slice of bacon. No urgency to open this if you’ve got some knocking around the cellar.

After 3 more years of sleep, this was firing on all cylinders tonight. On nose: smoky, gamey, grilled meat and tomato reduction. Plush in mouth with dark fruits, blood, pan drippings, some funk. Long, smooth finish. Minimalist style by Helen throws some sediment. Very good.

14.9% abv. Dark purple black, impenetrable color. Dark berries, cocoa, forest. Surprisingly little meaty or smoky notes typical of Syrah. In mouth, dense, full, lush, few tannins, very little acid. Smooth and slightly sweet medium finish. Probably best served chilled. Have serveral more bottles to see how this develops over next few years.

So sad it’s my last one. Time has done this one right.
