  • Though it’s certainly come together in the last 2yrs since I tried a bottle and a very good Noa Cab, the QPR is simply not good. Cut the price in half and then it’s a good buy.

  • Immediate notes ..... Pop and Poured the wine into a glass and discovered an aromatic modern cab with a wildly fruit driven nose and in fact similar juicy black fruit palette. This made me say ..... Wow. So like all of my past wow experiences I let this sit for 3 hours. Occasionally walking by the decanter to see if any aromas changed.

After 3 hours in a decanter I re-bottled and brought this out for my wife to try and maybe confirm. The result was surprisingly not as good as the initial tasting. It was almost as if the air had reduced its impact.

The wine was so smooth and controlled. The aromas remain quite seductive with blackberry, and mocha dominating. On the palette it is sweet dark cherry, blackberry, vanilla and then at the mid palette emerges blueberry, and graphite. The finish remains velvety with balanced acidity and long lingering blueberry notes.

What's missing is that opinionated modern Napa Cab start that I tasted at the first minute after opening, that "forever life changing spice driven fruit laden juice". The air at 3 hours seems to have mellowed that expression. Still I loved it. I believe increasingly that well produced Napa Cab's go into a period at that 5 year mark of evolving into a more sedate expression where spices give way to velvet, and sharp fruit to creamy fruit.

I have another and will give it a go in 5 more years.

  • Thinking a bit early and disjointed. Needs another 2-3 years before it hits its peak. You do really taste the Petit Verdot.

  • This wine opened oddly too sweet. It mellowed over time, but the cloying sweetness lingered more than we would have liked.

  • The 2014 'Black Magic' Cabernet Sauvignon is a masterpiece from Tor Kenward. The selection of fruit for this wine comes from the best barrels, regardless of what part of the valley they are from. The result is a simply monumental wine, which delivers seductive aromas of blackberries and dark currants woven together with sweet spices, mocha, graphite, spicebox and hints of floral all coming together and bursting from the glass. On the palate this full-bodied, voluptuous red is well structured and balanced, as it continues to impress with its deep layers and concentrated flavors of ripe dark fruits, sweet spices and mocha, which all cascade across the palate. This profound wine demonstrates a gorgeous textural richness with an opulent mouthfeel and polished tannins leading up to the exceedingly long finish. Tor and winemaker Jeff Ames have achieved something incredibly special and rare with this wine, as they were able to combine remarkable power, depth and concentration, while keeping it all in balance, resulting in a flawless wine. While this is already extreamly delicious, I expect it to continue to evolve gracefully and drink beautifully for decades to come. (Best 2019-2040)
