  • I was inspired to try an inexpensive, aged Tinto Joven by Soteriologist’s tasting note for the 1998 Heredad Ugarte Rioja. An interesting experiment, I admit. The bottle was in good condition, the filling-level was very top shoulder and the cork looked pristine. The wine was medium garnet in colour and offered dried cherry, vegetal notes, spices, tobacco, mushroom and earthy notes on the nose and palate, with medium-level acidity and tannin and average length. The light-bodied, mushroomy and earthy wine had moderate concentration, but sound complexity. The tannin was slightly harsh and the acidity not integrated well, and I guess you could say that the wine was a little rustic and slightly disharmonious. It did not stand up to food and even became dull and bland paired with rack of Iberico pig, but it drank reasonably well on its own, in particular after some aeration.

So will I run out and buy a case, or will I even fill my cellar with cases of Tinto Joven? No. But here is the thing – this inexpensive wine (the current vintages sell at less than EUR 6.00 per bottle) withstood time and was way more interesting and complex than any wine from the two bottom shelves of your local supermarket. And it drank remarkably well if put in context with its price and age. So I raise my hat to this Vina Tobia Tinto. Good job, Oscar Tobia Lopez!
