Nose opens slowly after 90 minutes: wet rusty iron, black licorice, burnt sugar, chocolate mint, and vanilla caramel w the expected deep black fruits. A long and tannic finish. This is medicinally intense, palate staining, brandied black plums and blackberries, espresso, with plenty of acidity. I’d give it another few years, and even then decant for at least an hour. This may gain a point or three but at the moment it seems over extracted and overoaked , and is more work than pleasure to consume. A tough pairing, also, although a blue cheese rubbed char grilled ribeye with lots of black pepper worked reasonably well.

Retail $175. 35% Grenache, 33% Mourvedre, and 32% Syrah. Whoa. It was a La Nerthe-fest with countless bottles of wines from the oldest producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1560). We decanted this wine a bit, and after about an hour? Holy Mother of Jesus, our Savior. Look, I am not religious *at all* but this effing wine? It makes me want to believe in a higher being. Like. A lot. Rich, spicy fruit on the nose with loads of black and red fruit. Whoa. The acidity jumps in at the finish and, Whoa.
Oak component really strong on the nose here. Spicy clove component completely dominates; similar story on the palate though there is rich fruit tightly coiled beneath the oak deluge. Nice finesse. Very fine tannins.

Spicy red fruits, smoke, espresso, and singed cherry pipe tobacco open the nose. On the palate, the wine serves up a delicious, concentrated blast of juicy kirsch, with freshness, spice, smoke and espresso bean. The wine was made from blending 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah and 33% Mourvedre.

First time among the round stones of CdP and Gigondas (Chateauneuf-du-pape, Gigondas): Low yield production. GSM.
Deep crimson color.
Salinity, nutmeg, red fruit on nose.
Strong young tannin, red fruit core underneath, nicely balanced. Should age beautifully.
