Deep ruby red. Dark and restrained nose with black spices, black bramble berries, tobacco, sweet purple flowers and a bit savory. Medium plus tannins (6/10) with a medium plus body. Jammy mouthfeel with a layered palate of black and red berries as well as some branches, bramble, anise and Asian Five spices. Long finish. Drink till 2026.

First stop on our fifth day in Napa Valley is Cardinale Winery. Last wine is from Mt. Brave and their Mt. Veeder Zinfandel, which is made up of 100% Zinfandel from Mt. Veeder. Only 85 cases produces and the first vintage of Zinfandel.
Deep ruby red in appearance. Quite a bit of spice on the nose with some tobacco, black fruits and earthiness to finish it off. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) with a medium plus body. Juicy palate with plush fruits, bramble berries, figs and branches. Long finish. Drink till 2026.

PnP the rest of the bottle tonight with a pepperoni pizza.....same basic notes as the other night just not quite as jammy up front to begin with. As time passes it develops more of the briary, brambly black fruit, slightly more astringency with the tannins and a lot more spice. One of the ways in which I can tell how good a wine is, by how long my mind decides to keep swishing and filling with air in the mouth before it finally swallows. The more time this wine gets in the glass, the more time it spends in the mouth. That's a very good sign.......

Coravined a glass late this evening, my original thought right off the bat was to give it a 90 immediately. A pretty standard zin nose of brambly dark fruit. First sip is a thick Aussie Shiraz jammy fruit bomb and a bit hot on the end, not my preferred taste profile in a zin. About 20 min later sitting in the glass and warming up, a hint of camphor now on the nose. Brambly fruit still there but absolutely no jammy component and the heat on the back end has disappeared. Nice mid palate with good weight, this is not thin (!) with a moderate spice component that follows from the mid point through a very nice moderately long acidic ending that leaves your mouth watering just a tad and it finishes at the very end with just a slight dollop of tart red fruit. On the last sip, the nose was still evolving. The camphor component was gone replaced by a slightly sweet rose petal component. Nice.
I am going to PnP in a few days and let it get more air and see how it evolves further. Chris Carpenter has crafted a quality zin here that evolves like one of his cabs in the glass.
