  • Wasn’t expecting much TBH. 20 mins in decanter and straight back in the glass. Performed much better than reviews a year ago. The quality is definitely there. Fine, precise, some cut, lingering linear fruit, 2 layers but utterly charming not Charmes. Happily pull another tmrw. Will age for another few years for sure. But, start pulling now. Drink it like the French do, not the British.

  • The sommelier at L suggested a decant. Mid-coloured; smart bouquet, a faithful reflection of its origins. Initially restrained & with plenty of finesse. After a couple of hours this deepened with plenty backbone on a persistent finish

  • The background is that I'm trying to learn Burgundy. I've had quite a few Bourgognes and I'm working my way through some representative village wines. I've had the Duroché basic cuvée -- this is my first Le Clos. It's a more complicated (but not necessarily better) beast. My hunch is that even after a day of air it's too damned young. It's very tannic and powerful and yet the nose is very delicate and charming. The taste seemed to wax and wane, at times seeming a little thin and at others a little much. So I'll bury these for a while and try another in 3 or 4 years. Really interesting and worth it but not yet a pleasure, if that makes sense.

  • Cool nose of red berries, earth, forest floor and spices.
Compared to the champ this is slightly more restraint and linear with medium flavors of cherries and stony minerals.
This is perhaps lacking in depth and the finish is slightly clipped with some alcohol warmness at the moment. Though it did improve and open up more on day 2.

  • Pnped. Also cool. Sour and crunchy red fruits: cranberry, some tart wild strawberry, some orange, green stems. Similar on the palate - this is tart, young, acidic with sour red fruits, a bit of sour citrus and maybe some rocks. Hints of spice and maybe earth. This is clear and crisp but it lacks depth and balancing fruit. Just fair. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4-4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/1 = 13/20.

t = +16h. OK, this is better than I thought it was last night. The nose and palate have fleshed out somewhat, although overall the wine is still on the light, tart and borderline thin side. The nose now shows more wild strawberry and pomegranate fruit with a touch of cranberry. There is significant light red and dark spice now, and a bit of earth and minerals. Also green stemmy aspect and some orange juiciness and acidity. The palate is still tart with wild strawberry, sour cherry, pomegranate and cranberry, but has fleshed out a bit. There is also some spice and minerality as well. Stems and green give texture. The finish is red and tart with hint of spice. Still, it is not showing much of what 15 can do, and it isn't good QPR. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4-4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/1 = 14.5-15/20.
