  • Bought 9 months ago at domain. In a good place. Even has some aged characteristics.

  • Notes of stone fruit, olive oil, quinine, bruised apple, yeast, banana peel, kerosene, lacquer, and dry white wood. A somewhat clumsy attack, with the back end stifled by the wonky flavors stammering their way across the palate. Lacking delineation of flavor, focus, and cut. The effervescence was somewhat dead as well; even the bubbles (what there were of them) were a bit all over the map.

Overall, this was heady and heavy on the palate, with the wood influence doing a little more "influencing" than I personally care for. I certainly don't mind a rich, full-bodied Champagne, and I even don't mind a wildly interesting one with a unique personality. However, it has to equal-out its weight with energy and lift, with a modicum degree of focus. This came off a little bit too burdensome mid-palate, creating a sluggish delivery and a flat mouthfeel.

An unfortunate disappointment. Not totally undrinkable (and better with food), but not worth a revisit. I much prefer the Clemence BdB. It's a pass for me on this particular "sparkling-ish" wine.

  • Barrel-aged BdB from Mesnil, with the oak barrels also coming from Mesnil. Toasty, with hints of baking spice that add complexity. The wood doesn't overwhelm, but adds richness. Drinking very well young; none of the tartness that mars some young BdB's. While the price is significantly about their standard BdB, this is definitely a cut above. Worth the premium? That's a judgement call but try this at least once.

  • Interesting idea, a double Grand Cru. The wood is definitely in evidence but plenty of fruit and acid to make this a really enjoyable drink. I think it will be better in another 6 months to a year.
