  • In truth not vintage 2015, but a blend of several vintages, bottled on 2015 (lot BI000BG). Mainly 12 year-old lambic with some 2 yo and 3 yo lambic mixed in. Flavored with elderberry flowers. 6% alcohol.

Clear golden yellow color with an orange hue and a big, persistent white head. Classic Gueuze nose with funky aromas of bretty barnyard, ammonia, grainy malt, some sharp green apple tones, a little bit of lemon juice and a hint of leather. No elderflower to speak of. The beer is bone-dry, lean and quite sour on the palate with flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some leathery tones, a little bit of savory woody character and a hint of spicy phenolic character. The carbonation feels rather high and quite persistent, whereas the hop bitterness is basically nonexistent. The finish is long, sharp and funky with subtly sweet flavors of grainy malt, some leathery funk, a little bit of tangy lemony citrus fruits, light floral notes of elderflower and a hint of green apple.

A tasty, sharp and well-made Gueuze with nice, bracing sourness, good funky edge and basically no elderflower character to speak of. I guess the aroma and flavors are so delicate that without a normal Gueuze to contrast this beer to, you really don't notice them - at least to me they were so subtle that I couldn't find almost any elderflower character here even when I knew to look for them. Fortunately this was a good, old-school Oude Gueuze all the same. Not particularly cheap at 24€ for a 0,75-liter bottle in a bar, but delivers for the price.
