Similar to other reviewers, my palate has changed since I bought this; while drinkable and a decent match with a steak, I found it a bit over the top with alcohol and oak. I shared it with a friend who is not a regular wine drinker and he remarked that it reminded him of whiskey.
Not enthused. PnP, deep purple and opaque on pour. Had some hints of chocolate and tobacco for the first 15 minutes, but then those faded and it was just "sweet and hot". Not sufficient structure to back it up, tannins just not there. A bit more restrained than my last Caymus (a Special Selection) that was so sweet to be nearly undrinkable, but not enough to try again...clearly Caymus's style is not my own.

Nearly pitch black. Sweet nose of boysenberry syrup, cherry syrup and charcoal. Palate is uneven, lacks smoothness. Predominately juicy berry flavors, some vanilla. Lacking structure, no tannins, and unpleasant acid.
This is terribly disappointing. For the $50, I'd rather have anything from Italy, France or Spain, or even a bottle of Conundrum which is less than half the price and much better IMO.
Stay away from the 1858 line.

Fruit forward Cab with a solid structure and texture. Consistent quality over last 2 years, typical Caymus with soft tannins and full of fruit, cherry with a hint of vanilla and spice. So well done. Decant or let breath.

Not a good value - I’ve had better $20 cabs. Deep purple, blackberry, Dark cherry, low tannins paired well with a steak.
