Opaque dark garnet in color, with light rim. Nose of thoroughbred stable and pencil. Velvety smooth flavors of cherry and strawberry with rich overtones of leather and spice. Tasted exceptional with 70% cacao Scharffenberger chocolates! Lost some flavors with fattier cheese.

Flock Tasting of 1970s Cal Cabs (Chicago, IL): Dark ruby at the core with no fading. Nose starts youthfully tight with cassis and cedar. Opens to offer graphite and vanillin. The palate belies its age with a medium body of pure, focused fruits and chalky tannins. Well balanced and vibrant. Cassis and minerals in the medium-lengthed finish. Outstanding. My #4, Group #5.

Very nice, although not as impressive as a '76 Burgess Vintage Selection tried the same night. Not decanted. We let this sit in the bottle for an hour before pouring. Very light in the glass. Nose of spices, red fruit, some mint, and a touch of cork (although the cork in no way obscured the fruit). A spicy wine with more acidity than the Burgess. Was better with food (steak bordelaise) than on its own, but quite enjoyable. Pleasant finish, too.

At home at dinner (pork loin).Medium-dark ruby color. Somewhat candied nose, but still showing attractive fruit. On the palate, slightly raisiny and a bit past it's prime, though still an enjoyable plump, round mouthful. Beginning to dry out. Probably a lot better five years ago. 5-10-9-3: 77/100.

Stag's Leap vertical 1973 to 2006 (Institute of Directors, London): Restrained, malty nose, leafy, tea, quite ripe, berried fruit, showed an understated persistent power - very fine
