  • This wine was named after the owner's grandmother, Margrit Hildegard Frank, who was crucial for the success of this winery in its early days.

Delightful! Sweet, green apple dominated nose. Dry with moderate acidity and a greenish straw color. Very smooth, evidently having been aged in oak prior to bottling. It has ample green apple and some pear notes over a mineral baseline, and the finish sees some citrus work its way in there. Interestingly, despite being a fairly dry wine, the residual sugar is readily apparent in the finish, though it's not overbearing. Another very pleasant bottle, the acidity goes quite nicely with some muenster cheese!

Of note is what it says on the side of the bottle: Margarit is apparently the wife of Willy Frank, the son of Dr. Konstantin Frank, who worked diligently in the 1980s to turn the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery into one of the premier wineries in the Finger Lakes. These grapes come from a vineyard the winery owns on Seneca Lake, which surprised me because the winery is based on the scenic Keuka Lake. Who would have known? The soil there has limestone, sandstone and siltstone, which explains the mineral characteristic in this wine, and its having been aged in French Oak would explain the silky body.

Overall a great wine. Definitely buying again!

  • Off dry 14 g/l, from Seneca lake vineyards, about 20% sees french oak which results in a soft and silky smooth drinking experience. Could benefit from bit more acidity to balance things better.

  • I really enjoyed this wine. Good structure, nice acidity and very expressive of its terroir.

  • Riesling fermented in neutral oak. Sur Lies nose on opening with hints of clean grapefruit, tarragon, and something else like crushed rock. Good body and sturdy Riesling structure, indicating further aging is a good idea. I can see this improving with another 2 to 6 years of bottle aging. 88-90. This is an 88 of very high quality.

  • Finger Lakes Vacation 2017; 9/4/2017-9/8/2017 (Finger Lakes, New York, USA): Tasted at the winery. Oak fermented with 1 year on the lees. Generous nose with lots of ripe, peachy fruits. Round texture, lime custard finish. Already delicious with great potential. Solid QPR at USD$32. "Very good-to-excellent," 90+/100.
