Pertimali's 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Dieci is a special version of their regular (not reserve) Brunello that was kept in the estate cellars (in oak and then bottle) for 10 years before being offered as a library release. Sampled over a two-hour interval from a bottle that had been popped and poured, it is a medium-to-deep garnet wine with an intense aromatic profile of red plums, Montmorency cherries, baking spices, licorice, sage, cigar tobacco and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, vibrantly acidic and without alcoholic heat (14%), it delivers flavors comparable to the aromas, wrapping them with soft residual tannins and fully integrated wood. Dense, layered and energetic on the mid-palate, it ultimately concludes with a finish that lingers beautifully. This is a terrific mature Brunello that should provide plenty of pleasure throughout the remainder of this decade. Because it seemed to continually improve throughout the tasting interval, it would be best to decant the wine off of its sediment and give it a couple of hours (or more) in carafe. Drink now-2030.

If you have a preconception that Sangiovese is rustic and too simple, I recommend to try Livio Sassetti. It shows many layers of violet, strawberry, vanilla, cedar, bubble gum and earth. One of the best Brunello I have ever tried.

Well this was only opened for maybe an hour and although not the best presentation for a significant wine it was still revealing a tremendous production. It was rich, savory and decadent. Flavors of soil, clay with oaked residue presented against ripe cherry fruit. This was an absolute beauty at 16 years !!!
