  • Portuguese Masterclass: Red Varietals (Lisbon, Portugal): Grape: Baga
Wine: Pai Abel 2011 Region: Bairrada
    Main features:
 Produced at Quinta das Bágeiras, one of the most traditional
    winegrowers of the region.
 The blend includes Touriga Nacional (20%). Mixed varieties in the
vineyard (15 years old). The two varieties were harvested at the same time and fermented (not destemmed) all together in lagares, aged in Burgundy barrels and then in an old wood vat (tonel).
 No fining or filtration before bottling
 It shows how the new Bairrada is facing the future, with complex, well structured reds but in a modern mood.
     2000 bottles produced

Producer never destems--regardless of stem ripeness or vintage! Huge bite on nose and palate. Autumn leaves aromas. This is a great, austere wine built to age, and I just love wines like this to death. I'm almost tempted to use the R word: real wine. But that's a bullshit, nebulous shithole of a concept.
