  • This Chanin entry level pinot has exceeded my expectations and become even better after yet another year. The interest level, balance and pleasure are all remarkably good, especially for an inexpensive pinot, which this was. I initially learned about it at a good Italian restaurant in LA several years ago. It was good then, but slightly rough around the edges. Based on that, I bought 1-1/2 cases of it and have watched it continue to improve over time. Of course, Chanin makes several much more expensive single vineyard pinots, and the ones I've tasted are great.

  • Prior bottle was 8 months ago and my notes were quite similar. Red raspberry, red berries, earth and spice notes on a nose that remains quite pleasingly aromatic. Nearly medium bodied with virtually the same mixture of red cherry and red raspberry that my prior bottle showed. The mid-body is starting to take on that very enjoyable rounded redfruit quality. Tart red cherry on the backside along with spices, earth and mineral notes. Tannins are neatly integrated and provide unobtrusive support. Wine is drinking quite well at present and based on my notes over the past 15 months in particular, I'd say it clearly still has time left, but there's no reason to delay.

  • Aging very nicely. Somewhat light in color and texture, pretty depth of flavor. A bit Burgundian in style. There's a slight sweetness that brings out the fruit, and no astringency, in contrast with what you might expect from the color. Perfect age now, it might develop further over the next few years while retaining its charm.

  • This baseline Chanin pinot has definitely improved with age! The hard edges of youth have faded away and now the fruit shines through much better, finely in balance with the other elements. Chanin is better known for their single-vineyard pinots, which are considerably more expensive than this cuvee. This was already a deal, now it shows itself to have been a steal. If their later years are anything like this as a good price, I'd suggest getting several and socking it away for a few years or more.

  • Prior bottle was just over 7 months ago and this wine remains in a good spot. Raspberry, earth and spices notes on a nose that seems more clean and aromatic than previously. Nearly medium bodied with rounded red cherry upfront, moving to a slightly darker and deeper red raspberry through the middle. Tart red cherry, spices, earth and mineral notes on the back and through the finish. The fruit shows more clarity and is more balanced than it was previously. This doesn't have the depth of Chanin's single vineyard wines, but it has come together perhaps even slightly better than I'd anticipated. Showing well now and should be able to hold this level for at least another year. No reason to wait and I'll plan to open my last bottle in Q4 2021.
