Tasting of the Utrecht Wine Society (Utrecht, NL): Tasted blind. Ripe and airy nose, ripe fruit, warm spices and undergrowth, mineral depth; powerful structure, big tannins, completely absorbed oak, ripe fruit; very good length.

Made from a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, average vine age 39 years, aged for 24 months on 100% new oak, 14% ABV. Clos de Milan tends to be a powerful and structured wine, and this slightly dusty 2004 has the customary firm, tannic structure, but it also has a particularly attractive sève and freshness of fruit, and more Provençal character than other vintages I have tasted. The new oak (this is what distinguishes the Ultime from the standard version) is beautifully absorbed but adds a nice touch of luxury. Lovely acidity and persistence. Opens up well after a short decant. More approachable than the 2007 but clearly a vin de garde. Drink now - 2024. Much better than the two (disappointing) bottles of the 2005 tasted recently.
