  • This took a bit to open up - six hours or so. But then was tasty with the ham dinner

  • 90 on the second day. Earthy soil aroma, medium to full bodied wine. Some black pepper from the Syrah but not too strong. Nice fruit balance.

  • PnP, with fleeting notes of black raspberry, olive, and tar on the nose. Ungiving on the palate, with only a touch of black pepper and raspberry. Going to try this on day 2 to see if it's opened up at all.

  • A blend of organically farmed Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%). Macerated with the skins for 3-4 weeks. Fermented and aged only in concrete. Vinified at the Chapoutier facilities. 14% alcohol.

Dark, moderately translucent bloody red color. Quite dark-toned nose with brooding aromas of somewhat wizened dark fruits, some peppery spice, a little bit of meaty umami character and a savory hint of brambly blackberry. The wine feels full-bodied, spicy and very ripe on the palate with somewhat savory flavors of fresh blackberries, peppery spice, some sweet succulent plums, a little bit of ripe boysenberries and a hint of meatiness. Overall the wine feels moderately high in acidity with medium tannins that seem to grow slowly in grip and intensity. The finish is ripe, complex and pretty fruity with moderately noticeable tannic grip and dark-toned flavors of peppery spice, ripe dark berries, some slightly wizened sweet plums, a little bit of leathery character and a slightest hint of raisin.

A very nice, characterful and firm Côtes du Rhône Villages with lovely intensity and purity of fruit. Despite being a wine from the hot vintage 2015, it feels surprisingly bright and balanced - although the fruit is showing some pruney and raisiny characteristics quite typical of hotter vintages. Nevertheless, this is a pretty impressive effort for such a basic-level wine and I love the purity and precision you get here because there is no obfuscating oak spice. Think of this more as a baby-Châteauneuf-du-Pape rather than a Côtes-du-Rhône. Good value for 15,30€.
