  Mid yellow colour, spritz in the glass. A light but typical nose, with candied pineapple, lime jelly, and minerals. The taste is more complex, medium-bodied and quite creamy, with nice acid-sugar balance and an almost bitter minerality. A bit restrained, no hint of age, rather a high price but would probably be best kept another couple of decades. Considerable residue of tartaric acid crystals at the bottom of the glass, unusual. [Natural cork; 9% abv; The Bon Vivant's Companion, Edinburgh, £30].

  BYO Blind Tasting: Blind. Sweet, decent acididy, aromatic wise a Riesling; rather bland mouthfeel, lacks complexity. Guessed Mittelmosel due to the warmish feel; it was probably rather the vintage.

  Nose reveals delicate lemon cream, golden apple and straw, with some interwoven minerality, background spices and a little petrol. Soft, subtle and creamy. Not a particularly expressive year, and the notes are subdued and subtle. Palate is soft, med plus bodied and off dry, with some richness and med plus acidity. Medium plus finish. Paired very well, actually ridiculously well, with my wife´s Persian dill rice and grilled shrimp. Persian food is not the easiest to pair wine with, but I always find that the richer German rieslings do very well with the grilled and rice dishes. But I would have liked a little more expressiveness and acidity here.
