The 1978 Inglenook Charbono had a slow start, and at first I thought it was corked, as my initial reaction to the nose was to note old library books. However, with time this bottle came to life, and the smell of moldy pages was replaced with earthy undergrowth, which led to a sweet-and-sour cherry sauce on the nose. The palate showed soft and round red fruit with cedar, which led to herbal tea on its medium long and fresh finish.

WOW! This was a fantastic wine. I have only had one other charbono before and it was of a more recent vitnage. let me say that this is not for everybody, but a trip back 30 years was a fun one. Out of the bottle it was a bit tight but after about 45 minutes in the decanter it was quite a unique experience. IT had a creasote nose and that extended to the palate. Jam and spice were also noted on the palate as well. Okay finish. I doubt there is much more avalible and if you are luck to have any Id drink it sooner than later.

I can't score this. It was way past it's prime. Still dark purple with a bit of an orange tinge. It took 3+ hours to breathe, but it was tired and on it's way to raisininess. Too bad. There was a drak closed aspect behind the raisin taste still, amazing for a 30 year old wine. When I had some with beef and some ahi tuna it actually was better. Oh, well, it was at least a good discussion piece with my family when we popped it.

A fresher express than the 1977. Held well into day 2. Less tannin remaining next to the '77. Next time I'll clear the calendar.
