  • Called “black Malbec” on label. Not sure if that means anything; color was deep but not overtly dark. Deep black cherry nose. Soft mouthfeel, wondered if there might be a little Syrah blended in. More dark fruit, fair amount of vanilla. Very tasty, if not a little manufactured.

  • Update a year later (1/2019): I don't tend to buy the Intocables Malbec very much, since the Cabernet Sauvignon in the same line is much better. But my original review stands.

(Original review 12/2017): Unusual wine from Finca Las Moras in that it is aged 12 months in bourbon barrels. In this case, the barrels are new (i.e., no bourbon flavour fortunately), the difference being that bourbon barrels are charred, adding a smoky taste to the wine.

While I'm not one for gimmicks, this particular experiment works quite well, and adds pleasant aromas and flavours compatible with Malbec (and Cabernet Sauvignon, the other varietal for which they do this). A sommelier-type at a wine tasting (of a different winery) I went to was disparaging this "gimmick" but I have to admit it works well for me and I buy these wines regularly.

As an aside, Finca Las Moras' other experiment--the low-end Dadá line--is, on the other hand, an offense to wine-drinkers: Here they add vanilla, coffee, and other "spice" flavours to cheap wines, presumably to give them aromas and flavours they would never have on their own. Dadá is practically undrinkable--I tried one of the "flavours" and made the mistake of trying a second (they have three different versions).
