Simple but correct Chilean cab, not trying to be a bigger wine than it is just some basic fruit, a hint of pepper, and good acid, down the middle style. Thankfully low alcohol and food friendly, perfect pairing with sloppy joes.

2016 Errazuriz Cabernet Sauvignon Max Reserva (Chile) Interesting nose of black currant, raspberry, prune and eucalyptus. This deep ruby medium weight symphony of blackberry, sour cherry and mocha has good length and nicely integrated soft tannins. My only beef is the slightly tart edge. However, definitely a verifiable “vin au verre” value that’s velvety and versatile for a variety of victuals and hence vanishes very quickly vis-à-vis the same old. Life is a Cabernet, old chum.

4h after opening it was quite a deep colour with no sign of age. A fairly restrained nose at first and plenty of red and black brambly berry fruit on the almost perfumed palate. Good blackcurrant acidity but with none of the expected 'sweeter' blackberry fruit. Soft tannins and fair length but much better with food. Later, the wine had changed. More cherry fruit and much softer. I guess this is still very young and will develop a lot further in bottle. The wine's 'big brother' (the Don Maximiano, also from Aconcagua) develops over decades so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. We'll see how it develops..... 88+

90pts. Cheap and well-made Chilean Cab Sauv. Always handy when you need a good red wine, and doesn't want to raid your cellar.

90-91pts. This wine improved a bit since the last time I tasted it. Excellent value at $15.
