  Dark purple red. Aroma of oak and cherry, touch of chocolate and smoke. Austere and subdued flavours of cherry, blueberry, some spice. A flowery rose petal aroma develops after a few hours. Lovely, but needs much more time.

  NEEDS more time! Dark red, great acidity, good tannins with great dark fruit flavours. Opened tasted and left for a day after vacuuming the bottle. Softer on the palate the second day but still more prone to the tannin than the fruit on the palate. This has all the making of a great wine if left alone for at least a few more years.

  Bright purple fruit. Intense dark drinkable and modern. Somehow this is also balanced with high tones, strong minerality, and great length. Took a few hours but really a pleasure.

  Big dark berry purple fruit and a much different profile than the Caillerets. More scale, more wood, soaring nose, impressive complexity, and great minerality. Totally different wines, the Volnay understated with balance/harmony/intense purfume, and the Pommard with scale, and fireworks. Both excellent.

  Dinner with Henri Boillot (Chicago, IL): As far as the reputation of Pommard goes, this is a wine that doesn't fit the mold at all. Perhaps it's because Rugiens is on the opposite side of the town as the most famous of Pommard vineyards (Epeneaux, if you didn't guess). In fact, this is, perhaps rightly, a little more volnaysien than I thought a Pommard could be. Beautiful lifted florals and red fruit, with a crunchiness and freshness from the bright acids. The tannins are present, but they're not rustic or heavy, but serve the purpose of reminding you that this wine is actually meant to be aged.
