  • Wow, this was one of those experimental bottles. I was in a small wine store that was new to me, and it’s stock was heavily skewed to small European wineries, almost all of which was unfamiliar to me. So I told the guy what I liked to drink and bought some unfamiliar bottles. “if you like godello, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, then you’ll probably enjoy this German Pinot Blanc.”

I expected to taste like a Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio. It didn’t. It has a big nose, tropical fruit and apple, which became delicious fruit on my tongue. It was like a brighter version of a chenin Blanc, same Apple but nicer than the chenins that I’ve had. It was hard to see that this had much in common with the Crémant d’alsace that I also enjoy and are also made from Pinot Blanc. This had a long finish and was a delicious wine with food. It tasted better when I finished it on the second day.

One question I am left with - Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc are described as color mutations of each other. Does this mean that color is the only difference between the three and that the difference in the finished wine is purely baseball n winemaking technique and time when the grapes are picked? In other words, could a Washungton state Pinot Blanc wine be made that tastes identical to a Pinot Noir, differing only by color?
