  • An imperial stout brewed with chili, black currant and coffee. Best before October 25th, 2020. 12,5% alcohol.

Pitch-black, oily and fully opaque appearance with a quite big, dense and persistent crema head. Quite dense, sweet and dark-toned nose with brooding aromas of licorice, caramel, bourbon, some powdered salty liquorice, a little bit of roasted black malt and a hint of chopped chili. The beer is full-bodied, rich and pretty sweet on the palate with flavors of dark chocolate, some bourbon, a little bit of vanilla, light cocoa notes, a hint of capsicum heat and a touch of sweet dark berries. The hop bitterness feels high, which sets off some of the sweetness, while the carbonation feels very fine and soft. The finish is long, slightly warm - even hot - and quite noticeably bitter with intense flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate, vanilla, some pithy grapefruit, a little bit of bourbon, a light espresso notes and a hint of sweet blackcurrant.

A rich, tasty and complex stout that once again manages to hit the high level on can expect of Põhjala's Cellar Series beers. Overall the beer could be a bit less bitter - the noticeably sweet taste certainly calls for high bitterness in order to keep the beer from tasting flabby or cloying, but at times the aggressive, grapefruity bitterness clashes with the flavors, especially with the chili character. All in all this is an impressive and pretty delicious effort, but perhaps doesn't manage to reach the quality of the best Cellar Series brews. All the same, priced according to its quality at 8,98€.
