  • Drank at the bodega in Mendoza. Great acidity and complexity. Was really surprised as wasn’t expecting much. Lemon, crispy top of a fresh baked loaf, cinnamon, pineapple tart. 1.8 G/L makes it decently dry. $40 list price is big bucks down here but really blew me away with the quality. 3 years in the tank, 7 on the lees before release. They going to release their 2nd millesime (bodega opened in 2004) in 2019 with the 2009 vintage.

  • A top-of-the-line methode champenoise from Argentina. At US $40 list price, it's entry level pricing for a French champagne but extravagant en Argentina where a respectable sparkling can be had nowadays for $7. It indeed was excellent, fine mousse, slight lemony notes that were very pleasant but did not add acidity. At the 40% discount that I got it for, I would readily buy a case, at list price I'd buy a bottle or two for special occasions.

Incidentally, when I expressed my doubts at the wine store if a 2006 bottle of champagne would have survived 12 years later (in a country not known for storing their wines for a decade or longer), he assured me that they just got the bottles in earlier this year, and that most of the storing was done in the winery prior to (and presumably some after) bottling, under controlled conditions. Indeed, there was no hint of corkage or the oxidation that often accompanies older champagnes that have been in the bottle a long time, and the aging indeed added a pleasant mellowness to the end result.
