  • 2016 Schloss Vollrads Schlossberg was ripe, generous and mineral-driven. The Rheingau Riesling was clear pale lemon in colour. It was quite reticent at first, with notes of smoke and mineral oil. Two hours of aeration opened its fruitiness of lemon zest, white peach and apricot, well-framed by smokiness and salinity.

The mouthfeel was dry, intense and medium-bodied, with high level of taut yet ripe acidity. Flavours of guava, tangerine, grapefruit and saline minerals persisted in a long generous finish. The alcohol level was a 13.5%. The wine was recognized as Großes Gewächs under the VDP classification.

  • 2016 Schloss Vollrads Schlossberg Riesling Großes Gewächs was ripe, flinty and mineral-driven. The youthful Rheingau Riesling was clear and pale lemon in colour. It was quite closed freshly out of the bottle, with notes of smoke and gunflint. Three hours of aeration revealed aromas of white peach, tangerine, mineral oil and sea breeze.

The mouthfeel was dry and medium-full-bodied, supported by high level of piquant ripe acidity. Flavours of grapefruit, lemon zest, apricot and a vein of saline minerality persisted in a long satisfying finish. The alcohol level was a 13.5%. It paired well with creamy cheese, like Comtesse de la Madeleine which is a buffalo milk cheese with truffle.

  • Second bottle since April 2020 (see tasting note for details), but definitely already in its drinking window. Should probably have waited to see how it develops over the years. Well, at least I have two bottles of 2015 left...

  • Bought 2 bottles of 2015 and 2016 each.

What I like about the Covid lockdown is that I get to cook with my wife and open a nice bottle of wine every other eve.

This GG was of course very young but already approachable and imo even at the opening of its drinking window. Initially quite mineral and salt driven, a bit later more fruity (lemon, stone fruit). Quite dry (7.6 g/l acidity vs 2.9 g/l RS) but showing complexity as well. (91-92p)

  • 2016 Schloss Vollards Schlossberg Riesling Großes Gewächs was dry, intense, evolving and mineral-driven. The Rheingau Riesling was clear and pale lemon in colour without any sediment. On the nose, there were expressive aromas of flint, wet stones and citrus oil, and with an hour in glass developing into lemon candy, honey, ripe nectarine and apricot. On the palate, it was dry (6 grams of residual sugar per litre) and medium-bodied, with high level of fresh acidity and intense mineral structure. Flavours of grapefruit, smoke and citrus zest persisted in a long finish. It would definitely take up complexity over a decade of patient bottle ageing.
