Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • I had four tasting partners taste through all 5 bottles of 2014 Kramer Vineyards whole cluster trial. I recommend if you do do this, start with a bit of 0%, jump to a bit of 100%, then go back to 0% and taste back up the flight. The variation of level of whole clusters included in the ferment becomes perceptible at each interval. This one small change of stems affected every component of the taste experience, i.e., flavor, feel, finish, etc., not just one component. For me and most of my tasters, 75% whole cluster had the optimal balance of structure, spice, wood, mouthfeel, and fruit. Each wine in the trial box was good. 100% felt too spicy and 0% felt like it was lacking in finish and structure. A great opportunity for tasting education.

  • Sangria colored. Aromas of red fruits intermingle with spice and floral notes and it ends up being pleasureable, albeit a bit indistinct. On the palate dark red fruit, that is with some tart notes (rhubarb/pomegranite) with some black licorice on the finish. The acidity and tannins seem to stick out more than in the 0% and 25% whole cluster wines.

    12.6% alc., pH 3.80, TA 0.6

  • Wonderful nose that is typical of whole cluster, with bright red cherries accented by floral notes. The palate registers as darker than the nose -- black cherries, black raspberries, rhubarb, pomegranate. On pop and pour somewhat disjointed with prominent tannins, but that quickly dissipated with vigorous swirling. Good, but preferred the nose to the palate.
