Further to my Note of March 28, '20: Decanted with normal sediment for its age. An initial oxidative smell blew off with some time, though leather and tar notes persisted with the fruit. More interesting than easily enjoyable, no reason to wait.

Bought 5b for 12/b at a local independent (expensive) wine shop's bankruptcy auction 13 years ago; this is #1. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Purple; fragrant simple cab sauv, hint of tartness (cranberry?); young cassis berries, some red cherry, some tartness, pretty good mouthfeel; bit of persistence. Tasty with some complexity; won't improve, glad I have more. Joint project between superstar and Indiana winemaker Larry Bird and real winemaker Mitch Cosentino. I am wary of celebrity wines, but this one's worth it at bankruptcy pricing. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is notable+ when considering quality (including small allowance for novelty), age, and price.

I think this wine is about the peak, on Pnp the wine had a very nice red berries fragrance flooding out of the glass. The wine had no visible bricking in the glass. On initial taste the tannins attacked the palate but the fruit was very vibrant. After about an hour the tannins softened a bit and the fruit was darker but the wine was a bit more smoother. This wine seemed young still for its age. I did experience something new to me in wine with this bottle, when drinking the wine i would get the feeling that there was sediment but I didn't see any, so i'm wondering if the tannins were providing the sediment feel and they just haven't settled yet. Anyway, i thought the wine was great. This was also my last bottle from my 07 Napa visit...need to go back.

Still had big tannins and black cherry finish. Initial heat which mellowed after about half an hour. Finish was a little astringent.
