  • Blanc de Blancs over lunch (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Unlike the straight Durcohe Gevrey village from the same vintage, this bottling from the "Champ" lieu-dit still felt some way from being ready to drink. It did have an amazing nose straight off the bat though - flowers, dried earth, cherries and red berries, with lifted notes of spice and a little hint of mineral running alonside. Lovely stuff. After that, the palate felt a bit tight, even with an hour in the decanter. Unlike the blushing beauty that the straight Gevrey has become, this still felt grippy and a little brooding, with fine-boned tannins and bright-acidity framing masculine notes of spice and earth, and flavours of darker cherries and red berries pulling into a minerally end. There was certainly some sinew and muscle on this. A good wine, but tight and needs time yet. At this point, the straight Gevrey village is a whole lot more enjoyable.

  • Lunch at Tung Lok Signatures (Tung Lok Signatures, Orchard Parade Hotel): Best of the three bottles I have had so far. Lovely. A bit tighter structured and more serious than the straight 2016 Gevrey village from Duroche, but no less delicious. This had such a lovely nose, with melting aromas of cherries and bramble wed to lower notes of earth and meat, all dancing out of the glass in a dance of savoury and sweet tones. So nice. The palate was just a tiny bit more backward than the nose suggested, with bright tones of sour cherries and a nice savoury streak of earth and mineral, all couched in fine tannins and well-laced together acidity that led into a nice finish. A really solid Gevrey village. Certainly a bit finer-boned and, higher-toned than regular Gevrey, which is drinking so juicily well now, with more pronounced minerality, and a touch more sinewy muscle and structure on the back-end. Certainly enjoyable today, but I would give this bottling a couple more years in the bottle to really hit its stride.

  • Still a tad young, but this was starting to show well. As with the last bottle though - a really solid Gevrey village. The nose was classic Gevrey, with red cherries, sweet plums and a hint of roses playing against a backdrop of earthy mineral, toasty, peppery spice, and just that little touch of roasted meats at the edges. The palate was very sinewy and muscular for a village wine, with a serious structure of fine, firm tannins and a decent acid balance forming a backdrop for bold flavours of red cherries, plums and, again, shades of rose, earth and peppery spice trailing away into a decent finish. A very nice foil for food now - we had a beouf Bourguignon and duck rillette on the night (both great pairings) - but this should improve with a few more years in the bottle.

  • A solid village. Starting to come around, but this does needs a few more years before it hits its best drinking window. The nose was quite classic Gevrey, with notes of earth and mineral framing rather ripe notes of red cherries and berries, and then a brush of herb and spice, maybe a bit of meatiness. Attractive in a rather masculine way. The palate was full and plump for a village, with juicy notes of red cherries and berries lined with a nice chew of mineral, and just that little blush of spice and florals leading into a satisfying finish. Fine firm tannins and nicely balancing acidity rounded off the picture. All in all, a pretty good village; very solid and quite pleasing, but still very sinewy and muscular at its core. This will be very nice in 5-6 years.
