On night two this is an excellent Napa Cab at 8.5 years of age. Opened a bit more to reveal a nicely balanced traditional profile of black fruit, leather and some oak but not too much. Well done and the 94 is a fair score on my scale.

First night note. I’m thinking there’s some bottle variation from the last negative note. Maybe it had a dead period; that was 5 years ago. This is making a solid first impression consistent with a $100 price tag. More to come tomorrow after it’s been decanted properly.

This dry and woodsy wine was a real disappointment when I ordered it at Charter Oak this past weekend (to go with a generally disappointing meal, too, but that's another story). Dark purple in color, medium in body, nose of boysenberry, menthol, and bay leaf. The wine offered muted tastes of mountain blueberry, charred wood, and rosemary, with a prickly finish that became (slightly) less biting with air. I’m not sure it this wine is rare, but it sure wasn’t good.
I guess this is a second wine for a Martha McClellan project on Diamond Mountain called Toymaker, but this didn't make me want to try the first wine. Although some might call this wine "fresh," I just thought it was thin - and a little boring. Aside from the nifty label (think the Nutcracker) or some bargain price from the producer, I have no idea why Charter Oak would choose to serve this wine, which needs more time (and more decanting) than a restaurant experience allows. Skip this one - it's not worth it at the retail price and (definitely, completely, totally) not worth it at the restaurant price.

No real tasting notes. Enjoyed a bottle at Press in St. Helena. Very enjoyable with steak.
