  • Halloween in the Vice Versa Cave: A kickboxing production of red and black fruits, tangling with earthy spice and darker, meatier elements that start to fan out mid-palate, but are stopped short at the finish line by a dusty grip. A more classic interpretation, and one I would have sworn was more Rutherford than Howell Mountain, the red and black cherry and currant notes roll in dry earth throughout the profile, with the tail accentuating the soil notes. It’s only hint at its terroir is the beefier element that starts to unfold but is somewhat immobilized by the mineral and loam notes. A wine that needs time to come together, which was even more apparent when served next to the 2016 Abreu Cappella – a much more expressive wine compared to its Howell Mountain counterpart. As for the Posadas, hide it for another 7-10 years. 95-96 points.

  • Nose: [58°] Damp earth littered with tree bark, wild purple flowers, macerated blackberries blended with ripe strawberries and dry clean stones. [64°-67°] A dark streak of graphite surfaces after the earth gets stirred by a huge tree branch. The note of strawberries deepen and become almost like a puree with ripe black cherries.

Palate: [58°-67°] Flavors lean more towards earth at the moment. Deep black earth melded with black and dark fruits. Similar notes of graphite from the nose and a finish of steeped tea with pleasantly bitter stones. There's something like rose water (or some sort of flower water) on the mid-end palate as well, a nice and subtle touch there.

Attributes: Clear dark medium ruby. Dry with medium amounts of grainy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium-minus to medium acidity. Good finish of at least 18-20 seconds.

Thoughts: Still too early for this but a hefty decant will help a lot. I get a sense of strong, bold flavors but with restraint. I can't tell if it is due its youth or if that was the intent. The underlying impression I am left with after finishing is that this is a serious wine with a softness to it, something akin to a gentle beast. 96 for tonight and easily a couple more points with 4-5 more years of cellaring. First Abreu bottling ever and I am now ever so curious about the Thorevilos.

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° for 3.5 hours before serving, continued to decant while consumed over another 8 hours (total 11.5 hrs). Recommend serving ~64°-66° with a decant of at least 2-3 hours at cellar temp if opening now.

  • Great night of over indulgence- and then cap’d off with great Signet scotch. 2000 Pavie Macquin, 2019 Tor VHR Pure Magic, 2018 Del Dotto Single Cluster, 2016 Abreu Las Posadas (killer even now with 4x decant and then 1.5 hours in decanter- stupid young but WOTN) and 2016 Kinsman Anjea (runner up) and 2019 La Pelle (best QPR delicious). Zero notes only simple impressions.

Damnit every time this wine is opened I feel like it’s a bee to honey as they know it’s one of my favorite wineries, winemakers and wines and inevitably I only get one glass (all in good jest as I am glad others get to experience such amazing wine). This wine is so young but even know has incredible complexity with an outstanding easily over a minute finish. With only one bottle left, I don’t see how I will get to enjoy these as they progress in their development and reach their pinnacle- for my palate as I still want strong fruit, I wouldn’t touch for months of 3 years. 96+ with upside.

  • Dream Trip - Napa On A Mission - All My favorites Plus A Few New Ones; 4/1/2021-4/4/2021 (Napa Valley): Whaaat I get to taste one of my favorite wines, along side its great grandfather 2006, in its own vineyard sharing a meal with great friends and amazing hosts and a winemaking wizard- and oh by the way it was just released so therefore no time to develop in the cellar just off the press goodness? Yes please and thank you.

This wine does not suck one little tiny bit- not at all. It was so cool to be able to taste a wine of this caliber which honestly I would never have attempted in my cellar as I would be too afraid of jumping in early and depleting one of so few gems too early... but wowza this was soooo good and no where near what it will become. black fruit, smoky like the last taste of espresso, chocolate, minerals, flowers, complexity, structure, dark fruit- umm yes please. Hold for a min of 7 years before opening.

For those that taste wines at this level and have not had the opportunity to taste the Abreu portfolio, please do yourself a favor and add this to your list as it is hard to beat.
