The 2015 Villa S. Anna Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poldo could benefit from another five years, yet it is classic and just lovely right now. Purchased in Montepulciano in February, it's made up of 80% Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile, with 20% other red grapes. Slightly sweet cherry, fine tannins, 13.5% alcohol, and a pleasure to drink overall. Would buy again if available.
Really quite similar to the ‘regular’ VNdM, with lots of strawberry and cherry on the nose, and mid weight palate with a fine balance, good red fruit. Perhaps a bit more tannin and structure than the regular, but also a bit tighter. Interesting discussion among tasters whether these reserve/selected wines are better than the regulars. Heavier and more structured isn’t necessarily better. The regulars seem to age nicely as well.
Btw this wine is not listed as a Riserva. According to the wine maker, it’s a selection across multiple vineyards, not a barrel selection or single vineyard wine.
