  • Cheap wine night part 3 in Lake Tahoe with non-wine-discerning friends. This was a recent dinner gift from another (non-wine discerning) friend. Bought some Coppolas when the winery first started when I was poorer and less discerning myself, but it has probably been 25 years. Opened but not decanted about an hour before drinking. Nothing much on the nose. On the palate, oak, smoke, and undifferentiated dark fruit. Medium dark, light to medium bodied, light to medium legs. Pleasant, velvety mouthfeel, no heat. No acid to speak of, light to medium tannins. Totally indistinct with tri tip. No worse than inoffensive, but entirely forgettable, with no sense of the varietal or place. In most circumstances, I'd choose over nothing or even a beer, but are we really at a point where that's the best we can hope for a wine in the mid teens? Isn't that what 2 buck Chuck was at least supposed to be at a fifth the price? If you're going to drink it, do it sooner than later, but if you want Malbec, our Southern friends offer much better choices at this price point.
