Good Syrah. Warms up to a bit of meatiness, a hint of pepper, but is relatively light overall. Oak is mild, acid is quite strong but not obtrusive, tannins are mild. It's more of a food wine than sipping, but is good.

We and our guests struggled to identify this as a syrah, more looking for a Sangiovese. A dense pack of dark cherries, both in the nose and on the palate. With more alcohol, this might have been overpowering, with the 13-odd percent, it is just great to let it evolve in your mouth. Still quite young, will easily drink another five years. Overall very impressive wine that I'll try to find more of.

2015 Castell d'Encús Costers del Segre Thalarn was perfumed, floral, intense and mineral-driven. The Catalunya Syrah was clear and medium ruby in colour without any sediments. The nose was youthful, perfumed and stylish, with floral elements of violets and iris, followed by red and dark fruits, like blackcurrants, blackberries, red cherries and raspberries. There was a touch of black pepper and smoked duck breast in the background that reminded me that was indeed Syrah. On the palate, it was dry and medium-bodied, elegantly balanced by medium-high level of acidity and medium level of supple finely grained tannin. Intense stony minerality, the floral, fruity and gamey flavours lingered in a long remarkable finish. The alcohol level was at 13.5%.
People usually say Australian Shiraz are muscular monsters compared to well-behaved polished Northern Rhône Syrah. It is new to me that there are even more floral and elegant expressions of the Syrah grapes in Catalunya, Spain. Complexity, balance, freshness and minerality were all delivered in this elegant Syrah. It was lucky of me to grab a bottle of this gem from the government monopoly, LCBO on clearance sale at CAD 47.65.
The vineyard was located at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level on limestone and sand at the Pyrenees Mountains, presumably on a south-facing stope as seen on satellite view on Google Maps. The vines were planted in 2005, and 2008 was the inaugural vintage. The juice was fermented in ancient craved stone vat from the 12th century stone vat, then aged in 60% new oak barrels for 12 months.
