  • So let's say for the holiday you're out of town, and in a place where wine takes a backseat to hard booze, and the options are very limited. You head to the local liquor hangout in hopes of finding a nicely throttled shiraz to go with the low-and-slow babybacks, and find the shelves loaded up with bulk juice from familiar brands like Yellow Tail. What do you do to get off the beaten path? For 14 bucks I had hoped the answer rested in the long heritage of this Aussie winery, but sadly, not with this particular bottling. Soft nose of cherries and pepper, with mouth of tart red fruit and alcohol, fairly harsh mouthfeel, short finish, and some oak splinters to finish. This was just no better than a B-, not helped by food, and did not get better over the course of the night. A huge disappointment given there are perhaps several hundred Oz shiraz out there that are more enjoyable at this price point. Worse for me, I banked on this so I bought two bottles. Try again McDuff.
