Sobon's 2016 Paul's Vineyard is everything that a Zinfandel should be. A deep ruby blend of 90% Zinfandel and 10% Petite Sirah, it delivers a pure core of black and blue fruit that is accented with licorice, cracked pepper, lavender and vanilla-laced oak. Full-bodied, fresh and somehow hiding its lofty 15.2% alcohol, it is impressively dense on the mid-palate and finishes with equally impressive length. This Zin belies all of the varietal's stereotypes. While ripe and packed with fruit, it has plenty of structure, tame alcohol and a true sense of balance. I would favor enjoying it in its youth. Drink now-2021.
