  • My final bottle. I admit, I wept. An under $20 stunner that opens with a full half hour of earthen funk. If earthen funk can be complex, then this had it, in spades. Slowly, very slowly it moved to sweet balsamic, drizzled over pomegranate and cherry fruit. Herbs and red licorice round out the dominant aromas. On the palate, this begins squarely in the medium-bodied, camp, and, in keeping with the nose, creeps its way toward full bodied, with fruits slowly overcoming acids. Tannins remain integrated and subtly in the background. Just the faintest touch of brett comes out at the one hour mark (only on the nose). Coats the mid-palate, finishes gently, but firmly. Lovely stuff here, I wish I had 3 cases. Faint raisin and plum notes emerge late in the game; suggestions of Amarone. Perfect.

Fruit bomb lovers, run away, lest your head explodes. Drink thru 2016, 13% abv

  • PnP. Still a dark ruby core, but with substantial bricking toward the slightly tawny rim. On the nose AND the palate, this thing is all over the place. At first, the nose and palate are almost Burgundian, very feminine, with subtle elegance. Somewhere between the 10 and 15 minute mark in the glass, all sorts of goodness breaks loose - sour milk, fresh cow pie, cherry skin, fresh cut violet, cinnamon stick. A few more minutes and fig shows itself, followed by notes of prune, sawdust, red licorice. Silky tannins, medium body. Just gorgeous, and all of it in a slim, lifted mold with only 13% abv. Highly enjoyable, full of nuance and character. Beginning to fade a bit. Drink thru 2016

  • PnP served over 3 nights (hit with gas on night one, re-served night 3), all showing very well. Brick red core with generous signs of orange-brown at the rim. Gorgeous aromatics of sweet herbs, clove, allspice, the gentlest touch of brett, tobacco leaf and candied red and black fruits. With airtime, this proves to be a wine as much enjoyed on the nose as the palate - the complexity and purity of fruit presented in an understated, elegant fashion. A touch of prune, fig and more complex herbs round out the medium-bodied finish that rolls along ever-so gently with the supporting acids and fine (resolved) tannins. My fourth bottle in the past 5 months, and the best one so far. Drink thru 2014, 13,0% abv, score: A-

  • PnP. consistent notes. I think this would be a solid ringer at a tasting. This medium weight entry adds volume and complexity with airtime. A lovely mouthfeel, very soft tannins and quiet, but balancing acidity. At just 13% abv, this is not your average ripasso, which makes me love it even more. Drink thru 2014, recommended for traditionalists.

  • Consistent notes. I just love all the funk that surrounds this leading into a fresh bowl of red and black fruits. Well balanced, light-medium tannins with just the right grip. A delicious table wine in a lovely, traditional old world style. Pretty much the opposite of most modern-day ripassi. Drink thru 2014, 13,0% abv. recommended+
