  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 12, Stellenbosch and Camps Bay (Cape Town). The 200ha Kleine Zalze Estate has 110 ha under wine. Kleine Zalze uses both estate grown grapes (roughly 1/3 of the production) and purchased grapes (roughly 2/3 of the production). We tasted Kleine Zalze's wines at the winery's tasting room, with our charismatic host Wayne van Rooyen.

Whole berry fermentation. 18 months in barrel, 30-40% new, the balance in in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. Medium ruby colour. Reserved, oaky nose. Mixed red and dark fruit, coffee, spices and lactic notes, with supporting g acidity and good length. Medium-bodied. Closed, oaky and a little disjointed at this stage. Much better with food. Hold. But I am not convinced that it will ever truly shine.
