Too young but still good to drink especially after 20 minutes. Super concentrated dark fruits, lots of teeth coating but fine tannins, light acid backbone to round it out but still fundamentally a big bruiser.

This wine reminds me of the final scene in Gladiator when Juba is burying the figurine in the dirt at the Coliseum. He’s talking to Maximus and says “I will see you again some day, but not yet, not yet”.
This wine will be glorious some day, but not yet, not yet.
After taking Sam Kaplan’s advice to decant for a 1/2 hour and then follow it along, this wine upon initial sips left a little to be desired. The mid palate seemed a bit flabby to me. But as the night wore on, it developed fullness and that quintessential unique VHR nose began to emerge.
95 for now with clear upside. If opening now, give it a solid 2 hour decant, or better yet wait 3-5 years.
One other thing- does anyone else want to jump through the TV and choke out Commodus whenever he was on screen? Damn, I would strangle that little b$tch.
What can I say? incredible bottle. Decanted for almost 4hrs. Aromas were jumping out of the glass. Black fruit, licorice, orange peel hints even. Smooth and well rounded, with a hint of minerality. Long finish. Exquisite. Wish I would have bought more. Will get even better with a few more years. Incredible what Sam Kaplan was able to make with this vintage. Bravo!

Seemingly the best MM wine of 2017. Drinking great now with minimal decant. An hour of air does it well… not much upside, it’s in a good spot.

Bumping this up after finishing the rest of the previously coravined bottle. One of the best 2017s from Napa that I’ve had so far.
