A private lunch (Restaurant Sagardi, Amsterdam, NL): Earthy and spicy nose with a touch of undergrowth, Atlantic freshness; lively and well balanced palate with soft red fruit and attractive beef stock flavours, nice salty grip; good resonance and length on the finish, hint of liquorice. A lovely surprise.

What a wonderful surprise! Pinot Noir is almost impossible to grow and make into good wine on the Iberian Peninsula. But the Atlantic breeze seems to favour it. This is a (likely unique) blend of 63% Pinot, 32% Hondarrabi Beltza and 5% Berdexa Zarie. Yes, you heard it right. It has lofty Pinot aromas of strawberry and sweet spices, a lovely fresh acidity, a medium body, and a wonderful puckering finish. It's not tannic but it has good grip and length and is very enjoyable. This is a good wine and a genuinely inspired blend. I wish it well and hope future vintages are even better. I've seen that it's expensive in the US (more than $40), which is a pity, because in its place of origin it's only around €18, which is about the right price point.
