  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 14, day of departure.

At the beach in Camps Bay, with Reni and Rainer. A bottle I bought for the occasion at the winery after our tasting at Kleine Zalze earlier this week. A picturesque setting, sitting at the beach with friends, sipping sparkling wine, Table Mountain on one side, the Atlantic Ocean on the other, waves rolling in…

The medium-bodied wine was grapy today, with a lovely flint stone note, some aspirin on the finish, good autolysis character, creamy mousse and good length. The wine had benefited from more freshness, but had a truly lovely texture and good balance.

  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 12, Stellenbosch and Camps Bay (Cape Town). The 200ha Kleine Zalze Estate has 110 ha under wine. Kleine Zalze uses both estate grown grapes (roughly 1/3 of the production) and purchased grapes (roughly 2/3 of the production). We tasted Kleine Zalze's wines at the winery's tasting room, with our charismatic host Wayne van Rooyen.

60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. Includes estate grown grapes as well as purchased Chardonnay grapes from Robertson. The juice was blended and fermented jointly in steel tanks. The wine spent three years on the lees before disgorgement, with a dosage of 4 g/l.

Stone fruit, apple, red berries, some citrus, nuts, biscuit, brioche and a hint of smoke, with creamy mousse, medium-level acidity and very good length of the pleasant, very slightly bitter finish. The wine had benefited from a little more freshness, but developed decent complexity as it breathed in the glass and warmed up. Lovely texture!
