  • Sweet cherry, caramel, smoke, spice and wood on the nose. Dry, elevated acidity, moderate tannins, medium bodied, 13.6­°. No fat. Sweet red berries and spice carrying through a moderately long finish. Good but not generous.

  • This has either evolved a touch since August, or this bottle simply drank slightly differently. Once again, it was just plain delicious and generous immediately upon opening.

    Unlike the last time, however, with several hours of air this became more giving, rather than less. As noted, a previous bottle - and a number of other WV 2016 PNs I've drunk over the past year or two - have coiled back onto themselves with lots of air, becoming tighter and harder. Not so with this bottle. I thoroughly enjoyed it over about 5 hours.

    As with previous bottles, this was even broader but softer on day 2. Not tired, and perfectly lovely - indeed, perhaps more conventionally "pretty" than at any time on day 1. But it lacked some of the verve and almost Dolcetto-like bitterness that I love about Goodfellow's pinot noirs. (Speaking of which, wow, would I love to see a Dolcetto from Marcus).

    Anyway, killer wine, great value, will buy every year.

  • When fall rolls around, I start drinking cocktails. Usually Negronis, but plenty of other drinks too, almost all of which are bitter and strong.

    This has the effect of obliterating my palate and really tamps down on my enjoyment of a lot of wine. I've had plenty of bottles over the past few weeks that were all well and good, but I just wasn't motivated by them. I started to wonder whether I have grown numb to Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, which makes up the overwhelming majority of my red wine consumption. Or maybe it's just the seasonal depression kicking in here in Portland. Whatever the case, I even had the stirrings of a suspicion that having several thousand dollars worth of wine in various closets around my house is a hare-brained idea.

    This bottle saved me from all that. From the outset last night, I loved it. It was lively with a pleasingly bitter edge that met my palate where it is. There was lovely red and blue fruit but also fresh herbs like thyme as well as orange rind. Overall this just had the exact energy that I was looking for, and drank well with "classic" spaghetti to boot.

    Kicking myself for not having a closet full of the Whistling Ridge SVD. At least I have a few more of these left.

  • Drank a few nights ago. Like other 2016s, this is just rocking and ready to go right out of the bottle. Exuberant and everything I like about warm vintages with nothing I don't. Like, a plush mouthfeel but without any sweetness or heaviness, and with fantastic acidity. Extremely aromatic.

    With several hours of air, the fruit started to fade and the structure came to the forefront. This is again consistent with other 2016 WV PN I've been drinking: Conveniently, and unusually for my tastes, they're great as a PnP and often less good on day 2. In this case, the glass I had on day 2 was still extremely drinkable, but didn't offer up any additional complexity.

    The fact that air brought a lot of structure out leads me to think that, despite the immediate pleasure this provides, the wine will likely age well. But with the 2017s requiring patience and with 2015s kind of awkward, I don't think my 16s will last.

  • Elegant and refined, showing good Oregon acidity and litheness, but at the same time it packed a nice flavor punch of cherry, strawberry and damson, evoking pinot from the RRV. Goodfellow wines always deliver for me - a quality vintner.
