  • {cork, 14%} Sullen, closed down sort of wine. Vague menthol and black fruit aromas and flavours, dense but lacking in overt flavour. Low tannins and reticent acid make the palate thick but without much distinction. Medium weight, but with a short finish. Should sing, but seems dulled somehow. Not sure whether time will cure this.

  • {cork, 14%} Dark ruby garnet. A tightly-wound affair, the nose and palate in close harmony. Iron, black pepper and some cabernet currant. Obviously youthful, but not raw at all. Medium/full body, but all in balance, coiled up. Medium powdery tannins, medium acidity, no hint of over-ripeness. Evenly coated the tongue right to the back; the best measure of quality. Polished and classy, with nicely judged French oak in the background. Not entirely sure about the back-label’s claim of 25 years aging, but I’d concede that it’s too young now. I’ve never quite been convinced that Taltarni wines eventually live up to their promise; hope this proves the history to be flawed. Give it a decade.
