The reference wine was important in that it showed the crowd how an uncomplicated PN from Burgundy behaves. The Punt Road also contributed by being fruit forward and slightly warmer than the rest. New world in a nice way.

Very good. Nose immediately up for business. A lot dirtier than the others. Barnyard funk and hay/undergrowth. Palate is thinner than the nose would have you guess but doesn't disturb all that much. Lovely type of winemaking. Funky is the word.

  • Beef, Cocktails and Wine (Casa Esperanza): This was very enjoyable. I really liked the nose, with its perfumed wafts of violets, blueberries, earth and a generous burst of warm spice. Lovely stuff. The palate was rather primary, maybe a tad simple at the moment, but really seductive - with a fair blush of violets, black currants and blueberries touched with earthy mineral and a nice twist of spice stretching into a long finish. A loved the balance and polish on this, with fine tannins and wonderfully integrated, bright acidity making for a lovely velvety mouthful. A much more open and supple wine than the regular Clos des Forets at this point, this was a wine that drank beautifully in its youth. I think it will put more complexity with time, and it certainly has to balance and structure to age nicely, but I am not sure many people will be keep their hands off this lovely wine now. Only 3000 bottles made.

  • WC L'Arlot virtual wine tasting. Sample pour. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of brambly whole bunch spice, dark red cherries, ripe cherry plum, dark stones, emerging forest floor earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, very supple gentle medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury forest floor earth, sweet meats, dark red cherries, ripe cherry plum, brambly whole bunch and sweet spices, dark wood toast and cinnamon. Long finish.
Very good quality. Older-vine selection from the Clos, made with 75% whole bunches and 50% new wood. I don't find this necessarily better than the regular Clos des Forets 2017. To me, it is a more approachable and supple wine, though it will certainly age well also.

  • Tasting at Domaine L'Arlot (Nuits Saint George): Only 3k bottles made. 75% whole cluster. 50% new oak. Similar to the Clos des Forets but with more power and spice intensity. The palate is rich and stems more prominent. Structured and firm on the back end. Hold for 10+ years. 92-93
