  • Perfect for me, all tertiary, too esrygy for fond others but very Bordeaux like to me

  • Wow!
My second and last bottle of this wine easily exceeded my expectations.
Fill into the neck, cork 3/4 soaked but came out in one piece.
Decanted based on my first tasting of this wine.
It continues to evolve in the decanter and glass with ever increasing fruity intensity. It has almost a Burgundian softness and richness to it.
The hue is beautiful; not a particularly deep color but minimal browning even after 36 years...
Mineral elements accompany the fruit on the nose adding an extra dimension. Good acidity, light body, no excessive alcohol and a spicy and tart finish. Good length.
Not likely to improve from here.

  • First of two bottles in a wooden case.
I approached this wine with low expectations. After all, this was a 35 year old bottle of Nero d'Avola from a very warm climate.
The bottle was in good condition with base neck fill and a cork in good condition.
We obviously did not decant this wine but rather let it develop in the glass.
re-tasted the following day and the wine was still holding up showing even greater aromatic display. Fruit alcohol, spicy and earthy notes and remarkable liveliness!
At first it was quite muted and the obvious reaction was that it was far past its prime. However, given 20-30 minutes, it opened up to reveal some very nice aromas. The hue showed a little browning, fully commensurate with its age. The aromas were all in the tertiary department with earthy, fruit alcohol elements. Very well balanced and soft texture as all tannins had melted.
Great fun to try this first release of Nero d'Avola. Will drink other bottle soon.

  • Duca Enrico was the first commercially available varietal Nero d'Avola red wine with this vintage. The grapes are sourced from low-yielding bush-trained vineyards. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

Dark, brown and cloudy color. The nose is both obviously overaged with raisiny notes and corked with mouldy TCA notes. The repugnant corky taste confirms the TCA.

A shame. It would've been interesting to taste the first vintage of this unique wine. However, based on the nose, the wine has been on a decline perhaps more than a decade, so perhaps not much of value was lost this time.
